Determination of benefits.

Most studies use relatively simple measures – mortality, altered life expectancy and probability of survival. In intensive care this may be inadequate. More effective measures are morbidity and quality adjusted life years (QALYs). Quantitative techniques are appearing to enable quantification of these essential intermediate states.

Quality-mortality measures such as QALYs are more efficacious than single summary measures, like life-years saved, which ignore morbidity, and discriminate against elderly and chronically ill patients.
