Opening a textbook on critical care medicine for the first time can be a somewhat overwhelming experience. In this tutorial I have attempted to summarize the important issues facing intensive care specialists on a daily basis. The discussion is not comprehensive, but will make the reader familiar with concepts discussed in the tutorials that follow. Undoubtedly respiratory failure, hemodynamic insufficiency and sepsis dominate the educational curriculum for and practice of critical care, and if you follow up the topics introduced in this tutorial, you will cover over 90% of the critical care curriculum. |
