A 69 year old female, with no past medical history, is admitted from home with pleuritic chest pain, shortness of breath, pyrexia and tachycardia. Presumed diagnosis – community acquired pneumonia in an immunocompetent host. The most likely organisms are pneumococci, Mycoplasma and Legionella. The patient requires coverage for both gram positive and atypical organisms. Cephalosporin iv + macrolide po or fluroquinolone Cefuroxime/Ceftriaxone iv + azithromycin po or levofloxacin |
